〘Noun〙① A dance performed by women dressed as men in the Middle Ages. It is said to have been started by the Shirabyōshi (traditional dancers) during the reign of Emperor Toba. A powerful and fast-paced dance. It is used mainly in fourth-form contemporary pieces such as " Ataka" and " Shichikiochi ." Also the hayashi dance used at this time. 〘名〙① 中世、女が男装して舞った舞。鳥羽天皇の時、白拍子(しらびょうし)が始めたという。舞童の舞。※玉葉‐承安元年（1171）四月一二日「先舞_二左右各三_一、其後童舞、其後又男舞云々」② 能楽で直面(ひためん)の男の舞う舞。力強くテンポの速い舞。「安宅(あたか)」「七騎落(しちきおち)」など、もっぱら四番目現在物に用いる。また、この時のはやし。笛を主とし、大、小の鼓によって演奏される。勢いよく力強いもの。〔日葡辞書（1603‐04）〕③ ②を歌舞伎舞踊に取り入れたもの。長唄が多い。※歌舞伎・勧進帳（日本古典全書所収）（1840）「三味線入り男舞になり、本行の舞になり、よろしくあって」
