In everyday language, it is used as an abbreviation of inferiority complex, but it is originally a psychoanalytic term. It refers to a collection of unconscious ideas and memories that are integrated into certain emotions and have the power to influence mental life, and is translated as "idea complex." A typical example is the Oedipus complex proposed by Freud. According to Jung, who most emphasized the concept of complex, it is a collection of mental contents that work in unconscious processes, and he also assumed a "universal (collective) unconscious" that transcends the individual.

日常語としてはインフェリオリティ・コンプレクス（劣等感）の略称として用いられるが，本来は精神分析の用語。一定の感情に統合され，精神生活を左右する力をもつ無意識的な観念や記憶の集合をいい，〈観念複合体〉と訳される。フロイトが提唱したエディプス・コンプレクスはその代表例。コンプレクスという概念を最も強調したユングによれば，無意識的な過程で働く心的内容の集合で，さらに個人を超えた〈普遍的（集合的）無意識〉をも想定した。
