A Rinzai sect scholar monk in the Edo period. Also known as Dokushi. His secular surname was Kumazawa. He was from Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture). He became a monk at the age of 18 and succeeded the 232nd abbot of Myoshinji, Mokusui Ryuuki. He had aspirations of compiling the biographies of monks from an early age, and after collecting materials for over 30 years, he published the 41-volume Enpo Den Toroku in 1678 (Enpo 6), which compiled the biographies of about 1,000 Zen monks of the Rinzai and Soto sects, and then published the 75-volume Honcho Kosoden in 1702 (Genroku 15), which included the biographies of 1,662 monks. He also wrote the 10-volume Togoku Kosoden Dango. He was buried at Seitoku-ji Temple in Minokano (Gifu City). His grave marker is called Kaiun-to.
