It refers to the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the center of Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. The name is said to have come from the fact that there was a roadside station on the way from Sagami Province (Kanagawa Prefecture) to Oshu. The area of Yoyogi Park next to Meiji Shrine was requisitioned by the US military after World War II and called Washington Heights. Clothing stores and souvenir shops catering to soldiers were established there, and the area has since become a fashion town, with trendy stores lining the zelkova-lined Omotesando. Takeshita Street and the alleys next to it near Harajuku Station are lined with boutiques, accessory stores, cafe bars, and other establishments selling a variety of crepes and ice cream, and are bustling with young people under the age of 20. The NHK Broadcasting Center and Yoyogi National Gymnasium are nearby. [Kiyoshi Sawada] This metropolitan park opened as a forest park on the site of the athletes' village of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It opened in 1967. With an area of 540,529 m, it is the fourth largest urban park in Tokyo's 23 wards. In 1990, three large and small fountains and a water corridor were completed. Construction began in 1963 to relocate the facility from the Tokyo Broadcasting Hall in Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, which had been in use since 1938 (Showa 13). The entire relocation was completed in 1973. In 1964, while construction was still in progress, some of the completed facilities were used to broadcast the Tokyo Olympics.
