Sekiyama
[1] [noun] ① a mountain with a checkpoint. Also, checkpoint and mountain. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 15.3757 " I have crossed Sekiyama and returned here, my heart is with my sister." ② A horticultural variety of Satozakura. The flowers are deep red, beautiful, large, 4.5-5 cm in diameter, and double. There are large and small petals, with 30-40 large petals and about 15 small petals. They flower late, in late April, and are widely planted in gardens all over the country. Kanzan. [2] Utamakura. Refers to Mount Osaka, where the Osaka checkpoint is located. ※Yamato (around 947-957) Mimikohon Fuzoku "As the roar of the storm at Sekiyama was silent, I was only allowed to meet you in name."

Seki-no-yama [Sekiyama]

〘 noun 〙 The limit beyond which one cannot go. The highest degree. No matter how hard one tries, that is the limit. The best one can do. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Tosei Otome-ori (1706), vol. 2 "Naraya's catering, a meal worth 1.2 momme, is a mountain in Seki. " ※Kakushihon, Ukiyo-furo (1809-13), vol. 4 "Your side will probably go to Mt. Oyama to offer sacred sake, or your journey to Narita-sama will probably be a mountain in Seki ."

[1] 〘名〙① 関所のある山。また、関所と山。※万葉(8C後)一五・三七五七「吾(あ)が身こそ世伎夜麻(セキヤマ)越えてここにあらめ心は妹によりにしものを」② サトザクラの園芸品種。花は濃紅色で美しく大輪で径四・五~五センチメートルになり、八重咲き。花弁には大小あり、大花弁は三〇~四〇枚、小花弁は一五枚ぐらい。花期は遅く四月下旬で、広く各地の庭園などで、栽植される。かんざん。[2] 歌枕。逢坂関のある逢坂山をいう。※大和(947‐957頃)御巫本附載「関山の嵐の声のあらければ君にあふみは名のみなりけり」

せき‐の‐やま【関山】

〘名〙 それ以上できないという限度。最上の程度。いくら力一ぱいしてもそのくらいまでだということ。精いっぱい。※浮世草子・当世乙女織(1706)二「奈良屋が仕出し料理、壱匁弐分膳が関(セキ)の山なり」※滑稽本・浮世風呂(1809‐13)四「おまへかたは大山参(おほやまめへり)に御神酒を納に行くか、成田さまへの旅位(くれへ)がせきの山だらう」

かん‐ざん クヮン‥【関山】

〘名〙① ふるさとの四方をとりまく山。転じて、故郷。※新編覆醤集(1676)三・訪僧雲居於正法山「今宵満奮難宿、只恐関山霜月寒」 〔徐陵‐関山月詩〕② 関所の近くの山。関所のある要害の山。※海道記(1223頃)序「意馬荒猿にはす、関山千程の雲に鞭うたす」 〔木蘭辞〕
