Land Survey Law - kokudochosaho
This law (Law No. 180 of 1951) was enacted for the purpose of scientifically and comprehensively investigating the actual state of the nation's land. Its aim is to promote the development, conservation, and utilization of the nation's land, and to clarify the cadastral system. The survey items include land and water surface surveys as basic surveys conducted by the national or prefectural governments, land classification surveys including control point surveys and the establishment of survey standards and the resulting maps, water surveys, surveys of owned areas (i.e., individual plots of land) conducted by local governments and land improvement districts, and surveys of boundaries and land area (area of land). Initially, the survey areas were mainly concentrated in areas or their surrounding areas dominated by rice paddies, farmland, and salt fields. However, in 1962, the Special Measures Law for Promoting National Land Surveys was enacted, and the scope of the surveys was expanded to include industrial development areas in underdeveloped areas and areas requiring advanced land use.
