In Japanese, the consonants in the ga row are pronounced as a plosive [g] at the beginning of a phrase, but within a phrase, depending on the dialect, they can be pronounced as a nasal [ŋ] in addition to [g], or as a light nasal sound before [g] [ŋg]. These ga row consonants pronounced as [ŋ] within a phrase are called ga row nasals (or ga row nasal voiced consonants) and have been considered the standard pronunciation, but currently there is a tendency for [g] to be increasingly used among young people in Tokyo and other areas. Even within a phrase, weakly compounded words are not nasalized, and in Tokyo dialect, there is a rule that the following are not nasalized: (1) onomatopoeia and mimetic words (garagara, gouguu), (2) the numeral five (jugo, gohyakugojuu), (3) words with light prefixes (ogenki, fugokaku), (4) words that begin with a ga-row sound at the end and are weakly compounded (koto gakko, madogarasu), etc. [Kazue Akinaga] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
