A popular song from the early modern period. Among popular songs accompanied by shamisen, the most classics for which the lyrics can be identified are "Nosai-bushi," "Katabachi," and this "Hosori." It became popular around the Kan'ei period (1624-44). It is said that the name was given because the song is characterized by a "thin voice," or that it originated from a pilgrimage song to the Western Provinces. It is characterized by the use of the interjection "nou sate." A representative song is one with the lyrics, "Hosori no yare dasho wa Yamato no Tsubosaka kono bushi wo naoshi nya nou sate...," which survive as a Yamanashi Prefecture folk song, "Doshi Hosori."
