This annual red algae resembles a reddish purple flower that grows at moderate depths on rocky reefs facing the open ocean; it belongs to the family Polyporidaceae (illustration). Its body is thin and membranous, and it grows to a size of 5-20cm. As it grows, the rows of cells around the body combine vertically and horizontally to form a striped pattern. This mesh structure is prone to splitting radially, and the sight of the split, tufted reddish purple algae swaying in the ocean is truly beautiful. The Japanese name comes from the beauty of its body. It is found in Honshu (the Pacific coast south of the Kanto region, and the Sea of Japan coast south of the Chubu region), Shikoku, Kyushu, Hachijojima, the Korean Peninsula, and the coasts of Chugoku.
