Karaitosou - Spicy pea

A perennial plant of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows 40-80 cm tall and is almost hairless. The basal leaves are pinnately compound, with 9-13 leaflets, elliptical, rounded at the tip, and coarsely serrated at the edge. In July and August, it produces dense spikes at the ends of the branches. The inflorescences are drooping, cylindrical, 5-10 cm long, reddish purple, and bloom from the tips. It has no petals, 4 sepals, and 6-12 stamens, which are much longer than the sepals. The filaments are reddish purple and wide at the top. The fruit is an achene, enclosed in a calyx tube. It is found mainly in the subalpine to alpine areas on the Sea of ​​Japan side of the Chubu region of Honshu, and a variant is also found in Korea. The name comes from the comparison of the plant's beautiful filaments to Chinese karaito. S. japonensis (Makino) Kudô has drooping purple inflorescences and similar leaves, but can be distinguished by having four stamens and flowers that begin to open from the base.
