National Speleological Society

National Speleological Society

...It is also an essential rule for cavers to preserve and protect the natural environment of caves, including stalactites, living organisms, and groundwater. Organized, purposeful caving began in the mid-19th century, but it was not until the 20th century that it was established, and the National Speleological Society of the United States, a global caving organization, was founded in 1941. Caving in Japan began to spread and develop in the 1950s, due in large part to the activities of organizations such as the Cave Groundwater Research Society and the Shikoku Caving Club, which were led by Masuzo Ueno and Hiroshi Yamauchi, as well as the influence of British Caving (1953), which can be considered an encyclopedia of caving.
