Ayatori - Cat's Cradle

Japanese: 綾取り - あやとり
Ayatori - Cat's Cradle
A type of game. It is a game in which players make loops of string and hang them on the wrists or fingers to create various shapes. Usually, two people take turns playing the game, but it can also be played by one person. In the Kyoto-Osaka area, it is called itotori, in Mie Prefecture, mizutori, and in Okinawa Prefecture, ukitotta. It is said to have been played since the Heian period, and the Morisada Manko has a picture of two women playing ayatori, and although it is rarely played in recent years, it is said to have been played frequently before the Bunka era (1804-18). In the United States and the United Kingdom, ayatori is called Cat's Cradle. Also, things similar to ayatori are distributed worldwide, and there are various types in Oceania and Africa in particular. The Eskimos make shapes such as boats, foxes, and whales, and in Africa, beds, moons, and lions.
