Maranhão (state)
A state in northeastern Brazil. It has an area of ​​328,663 km2, a population of 5,231,300 (1995), and a population density of 16 people/km2. The state capital is São Luís. It is located at latitude 1°-10°21′ south, and faces the Atlantic Ocean to the north. From the east, the basins of the northeastern rivers Parnaiba, Itapicuru, and Mearin open out, and lowlands extend along the coast, but the inland area is mostly plateaus with cuestas and shields. The climate is generally tropical, with a transitional pattern between the northeastern and northern parts of Brazil, with an average annual temperature of 25-27°C and an annual precipitation of 2,000 mm.

ブラジル北東部の州。面積32万8663km2,人口523万1300(1995),人口密度は16人/km2。州都サン・ルイス。南緯1゜~10゜21′に位置し,北は大西洋に面する。東からパルナイバ川,イタピクル川,メアリン川などの北東部諸河川の流域が開け,海岸に沿って低地帯が広がるが,内陸一帯は,大部分がケスタと楯状地をもつ高原である。気候は,全体として熱帯型で,ブラジル北東部と北部との漸移型を示し,年平均気温25~27℃,年降水量は2000mmに達する。
