A village in Kamiukena County, in the central-southern part of Ehime Prefecture. Population 1,509 (1995). Located in the Shikoku Mountains, surrounded by mountains with an altitude of 1,300 to 1,500 meters, the Omogo River and its tributary, the Kurokawa River, flow through the village. The village borders Kochi Prefecture from the east to the south, but the southern border is a plateau area of the Shikoku Karst at an altitude of 1,400 meters. The village area is in the southern part of the area formerly known as Kumayama, and in the mountains near the Tosa border, papermaking was done by cultivating paper mulberry. The Kumayama Uprising, in which 3,000 farmers fled to Ozu Castle town in protest against the Matsuyama Domain's new papermaking law in 1741 (Kanpo 1), began in Kuzu Village (present-day Nakatsu) here.
