Funo [village] - Funo
A village in Futami County in northern Hiroshima Prefecture. Population 2,063 (1995). It is located on the southern slope of the Chugoku Mountains, with the Nuno River, a tributary of the Gono River, flowing south through the center. The central settlement, Kami-Nuno, flourished in the early modern period as the northernmost post station of the Hiroshima Domain on the Unseki Road connecting San'in and San'yo, and the Hiroshima Domain's border post was established at Akana Pass, on the border between Bingo and Izumo. Currently, rice farming, Wagyu beef breeding, and shiitake mushroom cultivation are thriving in the area, and timber is also produced. It has long been known as a producer of iron sand, and in Ochiai there are remains of an ironworks that continued in operation from the late Edo period until the 1890s.
