A popular music style that emerged in the United States in the mid-1950s. Disc jockey Alan Freed is said to have been the first to use the term rock and roll. It is said to be a combination of white American country music and black blues and spirituals, or a white version of rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a beat with an accent on the back beat. 1950年代半ばにアメリカで興ったポピュラー音楽。ディスク・ジョッキーのアラン・フリードAlan Freedが最初にロック・アンド・ロールという言葉を使ったとされる。米国の白人のカントリー・ミュージックと黒人のブルース，黒人霊歌の結合したものとも，リズム・アンド・ブルースの白人化したものともいう。後拍にアクセントのあるビートを特徴とした。ビル・ヘイリー，プレスリーらが代表的。1960年代末からロックという呼称が一般的になった。→ロック
