1895‐1979 Peruvian politician and leader of the Apra Party (1924-79). Born into a wealthy middle-class family in the northern Peruvian city of Trujillo, his family fell into ruin when the sugar plantations were monopolized by imperialism. He moved to Lima in 1917 and enrolled at the University of San Marcos, where he quickly distinguished himself as a leader in the student union. During his student years he was exposed to Marxism and the ideas of González Prada. In 1919 he supported a general strike by workers calling for an eight-hour workday, and the following year he founded the González Prada Popular University for workers.
