〘Noun〙 The causative agent of various suppurative inflammations, including Krupp pneumonia and bronchopneumonia. It was discovered in 1886 by the German physician A. Frankel. It can be a causative agent, but it can also be found in the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx in healthy people. It is also called pneumococcus or Frankel's bacterium. 〘名〙 クルップ性肺炎や気管支肺炎をはじめ、種々の化膿性炎症の病原菌。一八八六年ドイツの医師Ａ=フレンケルによって発見された。起炎菌となることもあるが、健康者でも鼻咽頭腔の粘膜に認められる。肺炎球菌、フレンケル菌ともいう。
