...A surgical procedure in which a limb is amputated at a certain point and then separated from the distal part for medical purposes. Amputation at a joint is called disarticulation. Amputation is required in cases of necrosis of the limb, malignant tumors, severe trauma, infection (such as in cases where life is at risk due to gas gangrene, or when pus continues to be discharged from chronic, intractable purulent osteomyelitis), or deformity.
