German-born thinker and critic of civilization. After studying philosophy, sociology, and architecture, he became a journalist for the arts column of the newspaper Frankfurt, where he developed innovative critiques of civilization on issues of the middle class and popular culture phenomena such as film. His most famous work is Salaryman (1929). He fled the Nazi regime and went into exile in the United States via Paris, and in works such as Offenbach (1937) and From Caligari to Hitler (1949), he developed social thought theories using operetta and film as motifs.
