Year of death: December 1, 2002 (January 15, 1657) Year of birth: Tensho 14 (1586) He was a Kyoto Shoshidai (deputy governor) in the early Edo period and the lord of Sekijuku Domain in Shimousa Province (Sekijuku Town, Chiba Prefecture). He was born in Sunpu (Shizuoka) and was the eldest son of Itakura Katsushige, and his mother was the daughter of Kuriu Nagakatsu. He was originally called Shigenori. He was commonly known as Juzaburo, Gorohachi, and Mataemon. He was Suo no Kami. He served Tokugawa Hidetada closely, and later, together with Nagai Naomasa and Inoue Masanari, he was known as one of Hidetada's three closest retainers. In 1600 (Keicho 5), at the age of 15, he participated in the Battle of Sekigahara. In 1610, he accompanied Hidetada to Kyoto, and was appointed Suo no Kami with the rank of Junior Fifth Rank when Hidetada was proclaimed Shogun. He also served at both camps in Osaka. After working as a shoin clerk, he became Kyoto Shoshidai after his father Katsushige retired in 1620 (Genna 6), and was given a fief of over 27,000 koku. From then until 1654, he served as Shoshidai, the central position in the Edo Shogunate's control of Kyoto, for about 35 years, and even after he resigned, he remained in Kyoto until the following year as an assistant to his successor, Makino Chikanari. During that time, he inherited land and had his fief increased to 50,000 koku. In 1656, he was transferred to Sekijuku in Shimousa Province, but died in December of the same year. He was known as a famous Shoshidai along with his father Katsushige, and was praised by posterity as a "wise minister whose actions will be greatly appreciated." "Itakura Masakazu" and "Itakura Masakazu Zokuhen" are later compilations of records and achievements of the administration and trials of Itakura Katsushige and his son Shigemune, who served as Kyoto Shoshidai, during their tenures.
