Western-style painter. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1899 (Meiji 32), he went on to the graduate school, but the following year in 1900, he became a teacher at Mie Prefectural First Junior High School. His work "Night Train," which was exhibited at the 6th Hakuba-kai Exhibition in 1902 (Meiji 35) and won the Hakuba Prize, is known as an excellent genre painting from the early plein air school. Two years later, he joined the Osaka Asahi Shimbun Company to draw illustrations, and in 1910 he opened the Akamatsu Western Painting Institute in Umeda, Osaka, where he trained the next generation of artists. He received a commendation at an early Bunten exhibition and became a member of the Kofu-kai. In 1936 (Showa 11), he became a professor at Kansai Women's Art School, and in 1945 he became a professor at the Osaka Municipal Art Institute, and in 1948 he received the Osaka Prefecture Governor's Literary Award for his contributions to nurturing the Kansai Western painting world.
