Work by Rin Akamatsu

Western-style painter. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1899 (Meiji 32), he went on to the graduate school, but the following year in 1900, he became a teacher at Mie Prefectural First Junior High School. His work "Night Train," which was exhibited at the 6th Hakuba-kai Exhibition in 1902 (Meiji 35) and won the Hakuba Prize, is known as an excellent genre painting from the early plein air school. Two years later, he joined the Osaka Asahi Shimbun Company to draw illustrations, and in 1910 he opened the Akamatsu Western Painting Institute in Umeda, Osaka, where he trained the next generation of artists. He received a commendation at an early Bunten exhibition and became a member of the Kofu-kai. In 1936 (Showa 11), he became a professor at Kansai Women's Art School, and in 1945 he became a professor at the Osaka Municipal Art Institute, and in 1948 he received the Osaka Prefecture Governor's Literary Award for his contributions to nurturing the Kansai Western painting world.

洋画家。岡山県生まれ。1899年（明治32）東京美術学校を卒業、研究科に進むが、翌1900年三重県第一中学校の教員となる。1902年（明治35）第6回白馬会展に出品して白馬賞を受けた『夜汽車』は、外光派系初期の佳作風俗画として知られる。2年後に大阪朝日新聞社に入り挿絵を描き、1910年大阪・梅田に赤松洋画研究所を開設して後進を指導した。初期文展で褒状、光風会会員。1936年（昭和11）関西女子美術学校教授、1945年大阪市立美術研究所教授となり、1948年に関西洋画界育成の功により大阪府から知事文芸賞を受けた。
