Born: April 1, 1881, Lasinari, Transylvania Romanian poet and politician. Born in Transylvania under the Austro-Hungarian Empire to a priest's family, he studied at the University of Bucharest. He began writing poetry in middle school, and his lyric poems, which describe the suffering of Romanian peasants under ethnic and social oppression, are included in Poezii (1905), Ne chiamǎ pǎmîntul (09), and Din umbra zidurilor (13). He was driven out of his hometown after participating in the independence movement, but after moving to Romania he gradually became more right-wing, embraced fascism in the 1930s, and contributed to the establishment of a monarchical dictatorship as prime minister from 1937 to 1938.
