Hwangryong-sa-ji Temple Site - Hwangryong-sa-ji (English spelling)
The site of an Old Silla temple in Guhwang-dong, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Korea. It was the first national temple of Silla, which was built in the Hwangryongsa style, with three main halls lined up on one side. The foundation stones of the tower and main hall, as well as the stone Buddha seat, remain to this day. The Shaka Triad, the principal image of the temple, was cast in the 35th year of the same era, but the main hall was completed in the 5th year of King Jinpyeong's reign (583) and the nine-story pagoda in the 5th year of Queen Seondeok's reign (636). The Shaka Triad and the wooden nine-story pagoda were revered as the Three Treasures of Silla, along with King Jinheung's sacred belt, but were destroyed by fire in the 25th year of the reign of Gojong of Goryeo (1238) by the Mongol army, except for the relics in the tower's core stone. Since 1976, several excavations have revealed that when the temple was first built, it had one pagoda and one main hall, but during the Unified Silla period, this changed to one pagoda and three main halls. It is attracting attention as a rare example of the adoption of Goguryeo-style styles in the same period.
