Sanshu [village] - Samizu

Japanese: 三水[村] - さみず

A village in Kamiminochi County in northern Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,766 (1995). A highland village located south of Madarao Mountain on the border with Niigata Prefecture, with the Torii River flowing east through the southwestern part. The village has a water intake on the Torii River and is a purely rural village where rice and apple cultivation are the main industries, utilizing three irrigation channels (Imogawa Weir, Kurai Weir, and Fukoji Weir) excavated by the Iiyama Domain in the early Edo period. However, due to its proximity to Nagano City, in recent years it has become more of a suburban rural character and is also a bedroom community for the city. Flowers and tobacco are also grown.

長野県北部，上水内（かみみのち）郡の村。人口5766(1995)。新潟県境にある斑尾（まだらお）山南方に位置する高原の村で，南西部を鳥居川が東流する。鳥居川に取水口をもち，江戸初期に飯山藩によって開削された3筋の用水路(芋川堰，倉井堰，普光寺堰)を利用した稲作とリンゴ栽培が中心の純農村であるが，長野市に近いことから近年は都市近郊農村的性格を強めるとともに，長野市のベッドタウンともなっている。花卉･タバコ栽培も行われる。
