Azores [Islands] - Azores
A Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, about 1,300 km west of Portugal. Also known as the Azores. It consists of nine islands, including São Miguel, Terceira, and Flores, and numerous reefs. Most of the islands are volcanic and have experienced many earthquakes, including a magnitude 8 earthquake in 1980. Fruit cultivation, including bananas and oranges, is common. It is an important stopover point for air routes, sea routes, and undersea cables connecting Europe and the United States. The capital is Ponta Delgada. 2,247 km2 . 246,772 people (2011).
