National Defense Literature

Japanese: 国防文学 - こくぼうぶんがく

On the eve of the Second Sino-Japanese War, in response to the call by the Chinese Communist Party to form a national united front against Japan, this slogan was put forward by a group of party member writers living in Shanghai, including Zhou Yang and Xia Yan. The China Writers' Association was formed in 1936 as the parent organization for the movement, but prior to that, the Chinese Left Writers' League (Zuo Lian), which had been a united front organization in the literary world until then, was dissolved at the instruction of Wang Ming (Chen Shaoyu), who was in the Soviet Union. At this time, there was a lack of communication with Lu Xun, who was the actual leader of the Zuo Lian, so Lu Xun consulted with Hu Feng and Feng Xuefeng, who had just come to Shanghai on a mission from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and also consulted with Mao Dun, proposing the slogan "Popular Literature for the National Revolutionary War," and issued the "Declaration of Chinese Literary Workers."

日中戦争の前夜，中国共産党による抗日民族統一戦線結成の呼びかけにこたえて，上海在住の周揚，夏衍（かえん）ら党員文学者グループにより提起されたスローガン。運動推進の母体として1936年に中国文芸家協会を結成したが，それに先だって，従来の文芸界における統一戦線組織である中国左翼作家聯盟(〈左聯〉)を，ソ連にいた王明(陳紹禹)の指示で解散した。このとき〈左聯〉の実質的な指導者である魯迅との意思の疎通を欠き，そのため魯迅は，胡風や中共党中央から派遣されて上海へ来たばかりの馮雪峰と相談，また茅盾にもはかって〈民族革命戦争の大衆文学〉というスローガンを提起，〈中国文芸工作者宣言〉を発した。
