A perennial grass of the Poaceae family (illustration). Its Japanese name is Koya-zasa, which probably means the bamboo that grows on Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture. This grass is distributed from the Chubu region west of Japan, Shikoku, and Kyushu to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and its basic variety, American Koya-zasa, is widely known in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. It is a thin herb about 60 cm tall that grows in sparse forests and grasslands in mountainous areas, and grows sparsely in clumps. The leaves are attached to the nodes of the stem, are rather small, narrow lanceolate, about 10 cm long and 6 mm wide, and have sparse hairs on the surface of the leaves.
