Mount Koya - Koyasan

Koyasan Town, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture, is a flat area surrounded by Mt. Yoryu, Mt. Jingamine, and Mt. Benten in the Kii Mountain Range. At an altitude of about 900m, the area is a forested area of the so-called Koya Rokki trees, consisting of cedar, pine, maki, cypress, fir, and hemlock. Kongobu-ji Temple and Reihokan are located at the summit, and the temple town (the center of Koyasan Town) is made up of sub-temples, lodgings, schools, souvenir shops, and other facilities. It belongs to Koyasan-Ryujin Quasi-National Park, and is popular with summer vacationers who come to worship there as well as tourists. Before the Meiji period, women were not allowed to enter. The Nankai Electric Railway Koya Line runs through the area, and there is a cable car service. The Reihokan Museum also houses and exhibits treasures from Kongobu-ji Temple and other temples. There are many excellent works from the Heian and Kamakura periods, including paintings such as the Buddha's Nirvana, Amida Shoshu Raigo, and the Red Acala, and sculptures such as the Eight Great Children in the Acala Hall. There are also many excellent pieces of calligraphy, such as Kukai's Rōkoshiki, the Kinginji Issaikyō (Chusonji Sutra), and the Treasured Kanshu. In 2004, the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the World Heritage List of the World Heritage Convention.

和歌山県伊都郡高野町，紀伊山脈中の楊柳山，陣ヶ峰，弁天岳などに囲まれた平たん地。標高約900mで，一帯はスギ，マツ，マキ，ヒノキ，モミ，ツガのいわゆる高野六木の森林地帯。山頂に金剛峯寺，霊宝館などがあり，子院や宿坊，学校，みやげもの店などが門前町（高野町の中心）を形成する。高野竜神国定公園に属し，参拝を兼ねた避暑客，行楽客が多い。明治以前は女人禁制であった。南海電鉄高野線が通じ，ケーブルカーの便がある。また，霊宝館には金剛峯寺をはじめ諸院の宝物が収蔵，展示されている。絵画では平安期の仏涅槃(ぶつねはん)図，阿弥陀聖衆来迎図や〈赤不動〉など，彫刻では不動堂の八大童子像をはじめとする平安・鎌倉期の優作が多数ある。また，空海筆の聾瞽指帰(ろうこしき)や金銀字一切経（中尊寺経），宝簡集等文筆書跡にもすぐれたものが多い。2004年紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道として世界遺産条約の文化遺産リストに登録された。
