Lythrum salicaria - Lythrum salicaria

Japanese: ミソハギ - みそはぎ
Lythrum salicaria - Lythrum salicaria

A perennial plant of the Lythraceae family (APG classification: Lythraceae). The entire plant is glabrous. The stem is 0.5-1 m tall with four stripes. The leaves are stalkless, opposite, broadly lanceolate, 2-6 cm long, 0.6-1.5 cm wide, pointed at the tip, and do not clasp the stem at the base. In August, it produces a 20-30 cm long spike, with 1-3 magenta flowers, 6-7 mm long, blooming next to the bracts. The stalk is very short and has 6 petals. The calyx tube is 5-8 mm long with 12 veins, 6 triangular teeth on the edge, and needle-like appendages between them. There are 12 stamens and 1 style. The bracts have trichomes only on the edges. It grows in colonies near shallow streams and in marshes, distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. Its name means "misogi bush clover," and it is also known as "bonbana" because its flowers are used to pour water onto offerings in front of the Buddha during the Obon festival.

There are about 35 species of Lythrum distributed in tropical and temperate regions, and many of them are cultivated in Europe for ornamental purposes.
