Papillon (English spelling)

Japanese: パピヨン[種]（英語表記）papillon

A pet dog that originated in Spain. The name was derived from the fact that the beautiful tufted ears on each side look like a butterfly with its wings open, and it was also called the Butterfly Spaniel. It has long been a favorite lap dog of noblewomen, and there is a famous anecdote that Marie Antoinette never left the cell in which she was chained. The fur on the head, muzzle, and legs is smooth and short, but the body is slightly longer, and the fur around the neck and shoulders is even longer and more abundant. The body is white, but the fur on the ears and face is brightly colored in black, brown, lemon, etc.

原産地がスペインの愛玩犬。左右の美しい房毛のある耳があたかもチョウが翅を開いた形にみえることからこの名称が生まれ，バタフライ･スパニエルと呼ばれたこともある。古くから貴婦人のひざ犬として寵愛（ちようあい）され，マリー･アントアネットがつながれた独房の前を離れなかったという有名な逸話がある。頭，口吻，四肢の被毛は滑らかで短いが体部はやや長く，首まわりと肩はさらに長く豊富である。毛色は体部は白いが耳と顔の奴（やつこ）斑が黒･褐･レモン色などあざやかに彩られるのが特徴である。
