A full-length novel by black American author R. Wright. Published in 1940. The story is about a young black man who accidentally kills a white girl and then, fearing his crime will be discovered, kills his own mistress, and is sent to the electric chair as a result of his trial. In the novel, the elderly lawyer Max argues that the crime committed by the defendant is the inevitable result of the American social system, which is also the author's own indictment of the American state. The great significance of this novel lies in the fact that, by creating the protagonist Bigger, he established the formula that black literature = protest novels.
