A mite of the family Phthiridae. Found in countries around the world. Originally, they parasitize the larvae and pupae of insects of the orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. Sometimes, lice mites that emerge secondarily from these pests that infest grains and straw can bite people and cause severe itchy dermatitis. In Europe and the United States, they are often seen in people who handle pasture grass, and are called hay itch or grain itch. In Japan, they are well known as pests of silkworms, causing damage to silkworm farmers, and those that infest tatami straw can cause skin rashes.
