An American Tragedy

An American Tragedy

A full-length novel by American author Dreiser. Published in 1925. Clyde Griffiths, the son of a poor missionary, is attracted to Roberta, a female factory worker, while working at his uncle's factory, and the two become deeply involved. However, he also happens to meet the beautiful socialite Sondra, and their relationship develops. Unfortunately, Roberta becomes pregnant and presses him for marriage. Clyde is caught between two opposing forces, but he dreams of marrying Sondra and living a wealthy life. He lures Roberta out to a lake in the mountains and attempts to kill her by capsizing a boat. However, at the critical moment, his will is paralyzed and the boat capsizes by chance, drowning Roberta. As a result of a trial that is used for political purposes, Clyde is sentenced to death, but he dies with deep doubts about his own crime. Modeled on the Gillette-Brown case of 1906, this is a representative work of American naturalism that examines the tragic nature of humans controlled by their environment and instincts, and criticizes American society for irresponsibly encouraging dreams of material success. It was made into a film in 1931 by director Josef von Sternberg and in 1951 by director George Stevens under the title A Place in the Sun.
