It is one of the world's largest academic societies, composed mainly of American economists. It was founded in 1885 by a small group of economists who met in Saratoga, New York. Initially, it was characterized as a gathering of critics of orthodox economics, but as it grew in size, it came to assume a position as an establishment group in economics. Its current members are nearly 20,000 individual researchers and approximately 8,000 libraries and research institutes. Its journal, the American Economic Review, which has been published regularly since 1911, has become one of the most standard research journals in economics.

アメリカを中心とする経済学研究者で構成される，世界最大規模の学会の一つ。1885年，ニューヨーク州のサラトガに集まった少数の経済学者たちの手によって組織された。当初は，正統派経済学に対する批判者の集りとしての色彩が強かったが，その規模が大きくなるにつれて，むしろ経済学における体制派として位置を占めるようになった。現在その会員は，2万人近い個人研究者と約8000の図書館，研究所から構成されている。1911年から定期的に刊行されている機関誌《アメリカン･エコノミック･レビューAmerican Economic Review》は，経済学における最も標準的な研究雑誌の一つとなっている。
