…Born in Lochfield, Scotland, he graduated from Regent's Polytechnic in 1897 and worked for a merchant shipping company for four years. In 1901, he entered St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, University of London, and after graduating, he studied bacteriology in the laboratory of Almorth E. Wright (1861-1947). At the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Army Medical Corps and was sent to a field hospital in France, but returned to his alma mater in 1918 and became a professor of bacteriology in 1929. …
