… In France at that time, domestic production was planned to compete with the popularity of Italian lace, and Louis XIV's minister Colbert established the Royal Lace Factory in Sedan, and eventually invented French lace called point de Sedan (point de France). Colbert also invited lacemakers from Flanders and Venice to Alençon, and after repeated improvements based on the sketches of specialized designers, created the so-called Alençon lace, which became the envy of Europe in the 1670s.
