… In France at that time, domestic production was planned to compete with the popularity of Italian lace, and Louis XIV's minister Colbert established the Royal Lace Factory in Sedan, and eventually invented French lace called point de Sedan (point de France). Colbert also invited lacemakers from Flanders and Venice to Alençon, and after repeated improvements based on the sketches of specialized designers, created the so-called Alençon lace, which became the envy of Europe in the 1670s. The design of this lace included lotus palmettes, pine cones, carnations, and large acanthus-like leaves, and the outlines of the patterns were raised with cordonnets (thin cords) sewn with blanket stitches using thread, horsehair, or human hair as cores, and the lace was joined together using a regular hexagonal mesh. …
