…In 1830, at the same time as Belgium gained independence, conservatories were established in Brussels, Liège, and Ghent, and in 1843 in Antwerp, where efforts were made to cultivate a new national music. Of particular note are the musicological achievements of Fétis and François Gevaert (1828-1908) in Brussels, the compositional activities of Peter Benoît (1834-1901) in Antwerp, and the Liège violin school represented by Ysaïet. Musical activity in the 20th century began with composers Paul Gilson (1865-1942) and Joseph Jongen (1873-1953), who were influenced by Wagner, and has continued to progress vigorously. …
