The capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil, facing the Atlantic Ocean, is the second largest city in Brazil. It is often simply called Rio. It served as the capital from 1763 to 1960. Population: 5,473,909 (1991). Average annual temperature: 22-24°C (maximum 36.7°C, minimum 14.9°C). Annual precipitation: 1,500-2,500 mm. Average humidity: 77%. In contrast to the rocky mountains of Pan de Azucar and Corcovado, which have large blocks of granite and crystalline gneiss protruding in various places and have strange mountain shapes due to erosion and weathering, Guanabara Bay is a large inlet with an area of 400 km2 and a circumference of 143 km. The Portuguese who first discovered it on January 1, 1502, mistook it for a river and named it Rio de Janeiro (January River). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
