Takatoin Temple

Japanese: 高桐院 - こうとういん
Takatoin Temple
This is a subtemple of Daitoku-ji Temple, a Rinzai sect temple in Kita-ku, Kyoto City. It was founded by Gyokuhojoso, who inherited the teachings of Kokei and was counted among the 130th abbots of Daitoku-ji Temple. It was built in 1602 or during the Keicho period by Hosokawa Tadaoki to pray for the soul of his father, Yuusai. According to the 1787 "Zenshu Saikya Daitoku-ji School Lower Temple Notice," there were nine temples under its jurisdiction in Kyoto and Oita. Among the temple treasures, the silk ink painting "Sansui-zu" (written by Li Tang) is designated as a national treasure, and the silk color "Portrait of Inaba Ryoju" is designated as an important cultural property. Within the temple grounds are the tooth pagoda of Hosokawa Tadaoki and the graves of Okitsu Yagoemon and others.
