Naojiro Kataoka

Year of birth: 1793
A minor villain from the late Edo period. Commonly known as Nao-zamurai. Born as the second son of a Hatamoto travelling servant. He committed crimes together with Kawachiyama Soshun and was imprisoned, but was banished in Bunsei 7 (1824). He was arrested for extortion again and executed at Kozukahara in Senju, Edo. His body was taken by Michizai, a prostitute from Yoshiwara Oguchiya, with whom he had a regular business, and a grave was built at Ekoin Temple. The story of Michizai Nao-zamurai in the kabuki play "Ten'imushi Ueno Hatsuhana" written by Kawatake Mokuami, has become a love story that is often performed independently.

江戸後期の小悪党。通称直侍。旗本渡り用人の次男として生まれた。河内山宗俊と共に悪事を働き入獄したが文政7(1824)年追放となった。再びゆすりたかりを行ったため召し捕られ,江戸千住小塚原で処刑された。買いなじみの吉原大口屋の遊女三千歳が死骸を引き取り回向院に墓を立てた。河竹黙阿弥作の歌舞伎「天衣紛上野初花」の三千歳直侍の件は独立してしばしば上演される情話劇となっている。
