Located 550km southwest of the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil, this mountainous area is 500m above sea level. In 1967, iron ore (the world's largest reserves of approximately 17.4 billion tons) was discovered here, and the presence of non-ferrous metals such as manganese and bauxite has also been confirmed. It consists of mining areas such as N4E and N4W, and full-scale iron ore production began in 1986. As the main mine of the northern system of the state-owned company Rio Doce, which is scheduled to be privatized in 1997, the mine produced 43.2 million tons of iron ore in 1995. The mine is connected to the shipping port of Ponta de Madeira by a railway stretching approximately 900km.

ブラジルのアマゾン川河口から南西550kmに位置し，標高500mの山地。1967年鉄鉱石(埋蔵量約174億tで世界最大規模)が発見されたほか，マンガン，ボーキサイト等の非鉄金属の存在も確認されている。N4EやN4W等の鉱区からなり，86年から鉄鉱石の本格生産が開始された。97年に民営化予定の国営企業リオドセ社北部システムの主力鉱山として95年実績で4320万tの鉄鉱石生産が行われた。なお同鉱山は，積出港のポンタ･デ･マデイラと約900kmに及ぶ鉄道で結ばれている。
