The SI base unit of luminous intensity, symbolized as cd. At the 1948 General Conference on Weights and Measures, 1 cd was defined as the luminous intensity perpendicular to the surface of a black body (1/600,000 of 1 m2 ) at 1 atmosphere pressure and at the freezing point of platinum, 1772 °C. The number 600,000 was adopted because it was almost the same as the candle, the previous unit of luminous intensity. The same conference later revised this definition in 1979, and defined the candela as the intensity of a light source emitting monochromatic radiation with a frequency of 540 × 10 12 Hz in a direction where the radiant intensity is 1/683 W sr -1 . The unit name comes from the Latin candela (candle). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
