...Chilean politician. Born in Longaby, Linares. Became a lawyer in 1893. In 1897, he was elected as a member of the Liberal Party's lower house and entered politics. He became Minister of Industry in 1898, Minister of Finance in 1913, and Senator in 1915. Known as an eloquent speaker, he ran for president in 1920 as a member of the Liberal Alliance, which was made up of a section of the Liberal Party, the Radical Party, and the Democratic Party, and won with the support of the emerging middle class and workers. In the face of the economic recession after World War I and the decline of the saltpeter industry, he introduced extremely progressive political and social modernization policies, such as the introduction of social security, labor laws, and income tax, and the expansion of administrative power, but he fled to Europe in 1924 after a coup d'état. ...
