Atlas beetle - Atorasu ookabutomushi (English spelling) atlas beetle

It is an insect belonging to the subfamily Dynastinae, family Scarabaeidae, order Coleoptera, class Insecta. It is widely distributed in India, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Its body length is about 6 cm, but including the long horns that extend forward from the center of the head and both sides of the prothorax, it reaches 10 cm, making it the largest rhinoceros beetle in Asia. The back of the male's chest is shiny in a dark green or copper color. Adults hide in the shade of trees during the day and are active at night, feeding on nectar, buds, sap, etc., and also fly to lights. The larvae live in rotting wood. Two similar species, C. caucasus and C. moellenkampi , are distributed in Indonesia.

昆虫綱甲虫目コガネムシ科カブトムシ亜科に属する昆虫。インド、ミャンマー（ビルマ）、インドネシア、フィリピン、マレーシアに広く分布する。体長6センチメートル内外であるが、頭の中央部と前胸部の両側から前方に出る長い角(つの)を含めると10センチメートルに達し、アジア産で最大のカブトムシである。雄の胸背面は暗緑色や銅色などの光沢を帯びる。成虫は昼間は樹陰などに隠れていて夜間に活動し、花蜜(かみつ)やつぼみ、樹液などを食べ、灯火にも飛来する。幼虫は朽ち木中にすむ。なお、インドネシアには近似種のコーカサスオオカブトC. caucasusとモーレンカンプオオカブトC. moellenkampiの2種が分布する。
