Austrian pianist. Studied under E. Fischer. Made his debut in 1948 and performed at the Edinburgh and Salzburg music festivals. Since 1960, he has been teaching at the Vienna Festival Week with J. Demuth and A. Brendel, and has also been active in education. His repertoire is centered on works of the Viennese classical period. He has edited scores of Mozart and Schubert, and written many books on piano music, including Beethoven's Piano Sonatas - Performance and Interpretation (1970, translated into Japanese in 1970).

オーストリアのピアニスト。E.フィッシャーに師事。1948年にデビューし,エジンバラやザルツブルクの音楽祭にも出演。60年からJ.デムス,A.ブレンデルとともにウィーン芸術週間でマスタークラスを担当して,教育活動も行う。レパートリーはウィーン古典派の作品を中心とする。モーツァルトやシューベルトの楽譜の校訂を手がけ,《ベートーベンのピアノ・ソナタ――演奏法と解釈》(1970。邦訳1970)などピアノ音楽に関する著作も多い。
