Road sign - traffic sign

A road sign is a facility installed to ensure safe and smooth traffic on roads, and indicates necessary guidance, instructions, or regulations for road traffic in a certain formatted manner. The style of road signs, the classification of installers, installation locations, and other necessary matters are stipulated in the "Order Concerning Road Signs, Dividing Lines, and Road Markings" (1960) based on the Road Act and the Road Traffic Act. Road signs are broadly divided into main signs and auxiliary signs. Main signs are classified into the following four types depending on their purpose.

Guide signs provide information about the road, such as city/town boundaries, direction and distance to the destination, and famous points of interest.

Warning signs warn drivers of dangerous road locations such as intersections, bends in the road, railroad crossings, and road construction sites.

Regulatory signs indicate traffic regulations such as road closures, no overtaking, no parking, and speed limits.

Directional signs give certain instructions to drivers, such as "passing within the track area is permitted" or "parking is permitted," and also instruct pedestrians about crosswalks and bicycle crossings.

Auxiliary signs are used to limit the objects, times, areas, etc. to which the main sign applies, or to indicate the reasons for the regulation, and are usually placed below the main sign.

Regarding the installation of road signs, guide signs and warning signs are mainly installed by road administrators, while regulatory signs and directional signs are mainly installed by road administrators, mainly by prefectural public safety commissions, and by both. Usually, one sign board expresses one kind of meaning, but recently, variable signs, in which the design or letters of the sign can be changed by a time switch or a remote control signal, are also being used.

In addition to road signs, there are dividing lines and road markings based on the above order that indicate regulations or instructions regarding road traffic. Dividing lines are installed by road administrators and include center lines, lane boundaries, and outer lines of the road. Road markings are installed by prefectural public safety commissions and come in two types: regulatory markings and instruction markings. The former indicate traffic prohibitions, restrictions, or instructions, such as no turns or no changes of course, while the latter give necessary instructions regarding traffic, such as crosswalks, stop lines, and directions of travel. The United Nations adopted the "Convention on Road Signs and Signals" in 1968.

道路における交通の安全と円滑な走行を図るために設けられる施設であって、道路の交通に対して必要な案内、指導または規制を一定の様式化された表示方法によって示したもの。道路標識の様式、設置者の区分、設置場所その他必要な事項は、道路法および道路交通法に基づく「道路標識、区画線及び道路標示に関する命令」（1960）に規定されている。道路標識は、大きく本標識と補助標識に区別される。本標識は、その目的によって次の4種類に分類される。

　案内標識　市町村の境界、目的地への方向および距離、著名地点など当該道路に関する情報を教示する。

　警戒標識　交差点、道路の屈曲、踏切、道路工事など道路交通上危険な箇所を予告して運転者の注意を喚起する。

　規制標識　通行止め、追越し禁止、駐車禁止、速度制限などの交通規制を示す。

　指示標識　軌道敷内通行可、駐車可のように運転者に対し一定の指示をしたり、横断歩道、自転車横断帯などを歩行者などに対し指示する。

　補助標識は、本標識が適用される対象、時間、区域などを限定したり、規制理由を示したりするために用いられ、通常、本標識の下に付置される。

　道路標識の設置は、案内標識、警戒標識はもっぱら道路管理者が設置し、規制標識、指示標識については、もっぱら道路管理者が設置するもの、もっぱら都道府県公安委員会が設置するもの、両者がそれぞれ設置するものに区分される。通常は、1枚の標識板で1種類の意味を表しているが、最近は、標識の図柄または文字をタイムスイッチまたは遠隔制御信号によって変更できる可変式標識も使われている。

　道路標識のほかに、道路交通に関して規制または指示を表示するものとして、前記命令に基づく区画線と道路標示がある。区画線は、道路管理者が設置するもので、車道中央線、車線境界線、車道外側線などがある。道路標示は、都道府県公安委員会が設置するもので、規制標示と指示標示の2種類がある。前者は、転回禁止、進路変更禁止など交通上の禁止、制限または指定を示し、後者は、横断歩道、停止線、進行方向など交通に関し必要な指示を出すものである。なお、1968年に国連で「道路標識および信号に関する条約」が採択されている。
