Polish-born American pianist. Also known as Rubinstein. His parents were Polish Jews. He was born in Lodz (then called Lodz), Poland, and showed musical talent from an early age. He went to Berlin at the age of 10 and studied under Bruch and others. In 1900, he made his Berlin debut, playing a Mozart concerto under the direction of Joachim. After studying under Paderewski in Switzerland, he made his US debut in 1906. He gained fame for his wide range of repertoire, from Chopin and classical and romantic works to contemporary works, and performed with Ysaye and others. He made the US his base of operations from 1937 onwards, and became a US citizen in 1946. He also gained fame for his trio with Heifetz and Feuermann (later Piatigorsky), known as the "Million Dollar Trio," and his performances gradually became more intimate. He retired in 1976. His life, in which he had close ties with many artists including Falla, Szymanowski, and Stravinsky, is told in two volumes of his autobiography (1977, 1980). ポーランド出身の米国のピアノ奏者。ルービンシュタインともいう。両親はポーランド系ユダヤ人。ポーランドのウッチ（当時ロズ）に生まれ，幼時より楽才をあらわす。10歳でベルリンに赴き，ブルッフらに師事。1900年ヨアヒムの指揮でモーツァルトの協奏曲を弾き，ベルリンにデビュー。スイスでパデレフスキに師事したのち1906年米国にデビュー。ショパンをはじめ古典派・ロマン派から同時代の作品に至る幅広いレパートリーで名声を高め，イザイエらと共演。1937年以降米国を活動の拠点とし，1946年市民権取得。ハイフェッツ，フォイアマン（のちピアティゴルスキー）との三重奏，通称〈100万ドル・トリオ〉でも名声を高め，演奏も次第に内面性を深めた。1976年引退。ファリャ，シマノフスキ，ストラビンスキーをはじめ多くの芸術家と親密な交流を結んだその生涯は２巻の自伝（1977年，1980年）に語られている。1935年と1966年に来日。→カサド／H.シェリング／ビラ・ロボス
