Huangdi Inner Canon

Japanese:
Huangdi Inner Canon

A Chinese classical medical book. The author and the date of writing are unknown. It existed around the end of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 8 AD). The "Yuwenzhi" section of the "Book of Han" states that the "Huangdi Neijing" had 18 volumes, but the contents are unclear. It is said to have consisted of 9 volumes of "Suwen" and 9 volumes of "Lingshu". Today, there are three versions of the "Huangdi Neijing": "Huangdi Neijing Suwen", "Huangdi Neijing Taisu", and "Huangdi Neijing Lingshu". "Huangdi Neijing Suwen" was annotated by Quan Yuanqi around the end of the 5th century, and became the 8-volume "Quan Yuanqi Annotated Huangdi Suwen". Wang Bing of the Tang Dynasty corrected the corrupted characters, added omitted characters, added notes, and changed the order of the chapters, making it a "Suwen" with 24 volumes and 81 chapters. Based on this book, Lin Oku, Gao Baoheng and others compiled the current 24-volume edition of the Annotated Huangdi Neijing Suwen by imperial decree of Emperor Renzong (reigned 1022-1063) of the Northern Song Dynasty. It describes the basic theories of medicine in general. The 30 volumes of the Huangdi Neijing Taisu were written by Yang Shangshan during the Sui Dynasty (581-618). It is highly valued because it has not been altered like the Huangdi Neijing Suwen (modified by Wang Bing, revised by Lin Oku and others). It was lost in China during the Southern Song Dynasty, but an old copy exists at Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto, Japan (national treasure). The 12 volumes of the Huangdi Neijing Lingshu describe the theories of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, and are considered an important book.
