Kidō Okamoto's reading novels. Starting with "Ofumi no tamashii" (The Soul of Letters), published in the Literary Club in January 1917 (Taishō 6), he published a total of 68 stories in various magazines over a period of about 20 years until 1936 (Showa 11). Each story is told by an old man named Hanshichi, a former policeman living in Tokyo during the Meiji period, to a young newspaper reporter, and each story is a detective tale from the old shogunate period, with each story standing on its own. The scenery and social conditions of Edo in each season, which form the backdrop of the story, are vividly depicted in an ingenious narrative style, and the stories have been widely read and loved. Although it was created under the influence of Doyle's "Holmes Detective Stories," it is considered to be the original masterpiece of the "detective story" genre of period fiction.

岡本綺堂(きどう)の読み物小説。1917年（大正6）1月『文芸倶楽部(くらぶ)』に発表した『お文(ふみ)の魂(たましい)』に始まり、36年（昭和11）までの約20年間に各種雑誌に発表。総計68編。明治時代の東京に住む、もと岡引(おかっぴ)きの半七老人が、若い新聞記者に語って聞かせる形式をとり、旧幕時代の捕物話が、一話完結の形で展開する。物語の背景となる江戸の四季折々の風物や世態人情が、巧妙な説話体によって生き生きと描かれて、広く愛読された。ドイルの『ホームズ探偵談』の影響を受けて生まれたものだが、時代小説の一分野をなす「捕物帳」小説の元祖的な名作とされている。
